The Rib Lake High School Music Department is shared by Matt Robisch, band, and Mickey Wendland, choir. Mr. Robisch has taught in our District for over 20 years, and Mrs. Wendland, who joined us this year brings with her choral teaching experience, as well.
The following courses are offered by the RLHS Music Department:
Choir: The high school choral music program further expands the study of music through vocal performance. A wide variety of music is sung, spanning many musical eras and genres, to give students a complete musical experience. This class concentrates on the fundamentals of music including proper vocal techniques, ear training, and other elements necessary for good vocal performance. Attention is given to both singing in groups and the individual singer. Attendance at all concerts and performances is a requirement for this class. This includes: Holiday Concert, Solo and Ensemble Festival, Choir Festival, and the Spring Choral Concert. It is encouraged that students take Choir for the entire year, but Choir may also be taken for a semester.
Show Choir: Show choir will only be offered as a full year half credit course. Show choir is open by audition to all high school students. The requirements will be attendance at rehearsals Thursday mornings at 7:15 a.m., performance at all choral concerts and contests, and a weekly 10-15 minute lesson. Students will learn proper vocal technique, ear training, and other fundamentals of singing through a variety of pop, Broadway, and jazz style music. Students will also learn basic dance steps and movements to accompany their singing. The student’s grade will be based on attendance, participation, lessons, and cooperation within the group. A student taking show choir must follow the minimum requirements during the regular school day (i.e. a student may not take an extra study hall during the day because of the extra show choir credit.) Taking high school choir is also strongly recommended. The credit offering is to benefit the entire show choir by stressing attendance, making each rehearsal the most valuable, and by showing on the student transcript that they have participated in show choir.
Band: In band, students will be introduced to, and will study, many different styles of music. They will be encouraged to explore the creative and historical aspects of this music. Band is also designed to reinforce cooperation, responsibility, and dedication to a group. All band students are required to attend all performances (including concerts and parades) and will also have opportunities to perform in pep band, solo-ensemble contest, and in the jazz band.
Jazz Ensemble: Jazz band will be offered only as a full year, half credit course. The requirements will be attendance at rehearsals on Tuesday mornings at 7:15 a.m. and all concerts and contests, and keeping a student practice log that documents and evaluates an additional hour of practice per week. Students will learn to improvise in several keys with a rhythm section background and will also play many jazz standards. The student’s grade will be based on attendance, class participation and cooperation in the ensemble. A student taking Jazz Band is still expected to follow the minimum requirements during the regular school day (i.e. a student may not take an extra study hall during the day because of the extra jazz band credit), and be enrolled in band for the year. (Except for special circumstances due to instrumental needs.) The credit offering is to benefit the entire band by stressing attendance, making rehearsals a more valuable time, and by showing on their transcript that they have participated in Jazz Band.
